Looking back at my gallery, I see that I first uploaded a steampunk piece exactly seven years ago. It's a shame and a crime that I haven't made a pair of steampunk goggles in all that time.

The "Extreme Librarian" concept comes from China Mieville's book "Un Lun Dun". The book isn't exactly steampunk, but I feel like an Extreme Librarian character is perfect for the genre. I mean think about it; in a Neo-Victorian setting a library could be ANYWHERE. In a castle. On an airship. Inside a submarine. A good librarian has got to be prepared for everything. (And mad scientists? Passionate about their book collections, but lousy about keeping everything in order. The number of evil geniuses who just canNOT learn the Dewey Decimal system would make you cry, it really would.)

Goggles are of course a must. They come in handy when fending off an avalanche of unsorted paperwork. (You think bruised toes from dropped books are bad? Try paper cuts on your face.) The crosshairs on the right hand lens are actually a margin and level, for handwriting along a perfect line when you don't have a ruler handy (Poor penmanship kills, people.) And tucking a pencil behind the ear doesn't work as well when you have safety goggles to take on and off, so the metal coil keeps your writing implement secure. The clockwork lens on the left hand side is for...um...decoration. (You have to cut me a little slack; I knew clockwork had to go SOMEwhere.) And with the velvet trim on the straps and polished brass metalwork, it's perfect for the stylish librarian on the go.

I made these out of a pair of REALLY worn out welder's goggles that I found at the flea market. Ended up smashing both of the tinted lenses trying to refurbish these. The only problem I have with the final design is that they won't fit over my reading glasses. That's probably something to work out with my next pair.

OMG. I would *love* to have a pair... since my handwriting is atrocious (at best) and undecipherable (at worst)

Thanks! I'm still trying to make the margin-lens work; it's a little tricky to focus on the writing AND the line at the same time. Maybe the next set I make will have a telescoping extension, so I can bring the line closer to the paper.

Thank you! It was a choice between swirlies and gluing clockwork to it, and I figured that metal cogs and gears would do bad things to the pencil sharpener.

And by all means, bring the goggles along this summer! I have brass spray paint and plenty of that welding compound left over.
