My mother recently tried to give her old upright piano to charity (it used to belong to my grandparents, and fifteen or so years of disuse and Florida humidity have not been kind to it). The answer was always the same: no one wanted it. Apparently it's easier to buy a new piano than it is to repair an old one.
My younger sister and her boyfriend spent a weekend taking the piano apart and salvaging whatever they could. I've claimed half the keys, and have so far managed to use three. Expect many many more projects like this one to be posted.
This particular piece is made from a section of an ivory key, inlaid with tiny pieces of an ebony key. It's heavily lacquered, which in a way is a shame since the raw ivory pieces smelled intriguingly of antique lemon furniture polish. Oddly enough, when cut apart the ebony keys smelled like candy.
