Shakespeare - Comedy by Fandragon Shakespeare - Comedy by Fandragon
This is a VERY old piece (I'm thinking at least fourteen years old, maybe older), and I realized when visiting my parents this year that I'd never gotten a good picture of it. And I still haven't! (rimshot) Thank you, I'll be here all night...

I carved this statue from basswood for my Dad. He retired from the theater a few years ago, and one of my earliest memories is getting to see him play Trinculo in Shakespeare's "The Tempest". I think I was about six at the time and didn't understand much of what was going on, but watching him stagger across the stage had me giggling helplessly.  Not a bad introduction to the theater, and when my Dad asked if I could carve a Shakespeare figure for him, I decided to do a tribute to his comedies.

If it's not easy to see (these camera phone pictures looked better on the camera than they do on a computer screen), the props that Shakespeare has here are a cape made from a blanket, a wooden sword tied around his waist with a rope, a wine bottle, a parchment scroll covered with the names of Shakespeare's comedies, a comedy symbol at the front, and a donkey mask (from "A Midsummer Night's Dream").

Always loved this one, especially the dynamic pose, pretty impressed that he stands so solidly with so few points to hold him up.
