This was a present for my dad's birthday. It's probably not very obvious (my dad wanted something "almost abstract") but it's the child from the end of "The Emperor's New Clothes". Dearest Father loves art and literature, but he has a REALLY low tolerance for people who say they love an art form just to keep from looking stupid. Or if he thinks that's why they're saying it, I guess. (This all came from a conversation after watching a news story puff-piece about an artist who's latest "ground-breaking" work consisted of porcelain urinals bolted to the museum walls. I think it was the fawning tone of the news announcer that he objected to, but anyway...)
I carved this out of a seven-inch tall piece of wood that was labeled "Purpleheart Figured" at the wood supply store. That isn't a purple-colored stain by the way; it really is that dark. And it's EXTREMELY hard, but it also doesn't split or crumble when carved. I may have to use the leftover pieces to make some roses.
Side note: I decided that I didn't have enough projects going already, so while carving this I took pictures of the process, and then animated them. Here's a link to the finished piece: [link] . Three days of uploading and messing around with different formats, and all I ever got here was the eternal "Loading" message. If that's ever cleared up, I may post the animation here. Or not.
