When I decided to carve another dragon staff for my entry in the NC State Fair Craft Competition, I had NO idea it was going to take that much time. Just a simple dragon coiling around a stick, I thought, how much time could it take? Well let me tell you, just drawing the pattern of the scales took FOUR DAYS. I think I saw those scales in my dreams for a while.
This is carved from a sapling cut down out of a friend's yard (yes, with her permission, we're not talking about a midnight raid with a saw). It's maple...I think. I know for a fact that it isn't poplar, birch, oak, or pine. Beyond that, I tend to identify all trees with very faint grain as maple. I bought the crystal at the Raleigh Flea Market, which takes place on the North Carolina fairgrounds, so I guess it's now come full circle.
Edit: BLUE RIBBON, BLUE RIBBON, RAH RAH RAH!!! Sorry, I'm a little excited. Blue ribbon in the Handicrafts and Hobbies section at the NC State Fair. Wheeeeeee!!!!!
