Okay, the idea worked. Now I need to make many more.
I've been looking around for typewriter keys for ages, since that's another Victorian-type object that fits into steampunk. (And yes, I KNOW most typewriter keys out there were made WAY after the early 1900's. It still fits. Work with me here...)
Have you TRIED to find typewriter keys lately? They're harder to find than watch parts. So I made some of my own.
For the curious, the keys are made from metal buttons. I printed out some letters on thick paper (Lucida Console font, I think), and glued them to the back of the buttons, after putting a length of wire through the little button holes. Then I coated the paper with lacquer and twisted the wire into loops for hanging.
The really hard part was finding the right buttons. Yay! I have more things to search for at the flea-market!
Oh, and the choice of letters? Texting with a Victorian theme made me happy. Next up: LOL, ROFL, and OMG.

Old typewriter keys are a big pain in the ass to find. I'm always on the lookout for them at flea markets and tag sales and I've only gotten lucky once. But, what a creative idea to make them out of buttons. If you hadn't said otherwise in the description I would have thought they were real.
