Musical Chair 1: At Its Heart

Description

Gosh, it's been a while since I uploaded anything, hasn't it?

Expect a flood of stuff soon, because I've finally finished my latest project: The Musical Chairs Fundraiser. This was a contest/auction that was set up to raise money for the Durham Medical Orchestra (dmomusic.org/) and The Scrap Exchange (scrapexchange.org/). The assignment was to take an old chair and redecorate it with a musical theme using recycled materials. I needed another project like I need a hole in the head, but come on, how could I resist?

The piece here...was NOT my main submission. At the start of this project we had a lovely wine-and-cheese reception where the artists were able to pick through a pile of old musical instrument parts that had been donated by a repair shop. (For future reference, music + cheese + a pile of possibilities for a craft project = my idea of heaven). I had a vague idea of attaching two violin scrolls to a chair-back, and I was able to get TWO scrolls here, so I didn't have to worry about doing something impossible like actually carving my own. One of the scrolls was attached to a violin body (low-quality and worn out, so it wasn't worth the effort to repair), and I didn't want to waste something like that, so I made a secondary small project with a tiny chair inside, just for fun.

Aaaand then this one ended up selling at the final auction for more than twice as much as my main project, AND it won second prize in the contest. You honestly never can tell.

Here's the description I submitted along with the artwork:

"Music can be a refuge, and since the hollow body of a violin is where vibration is turned into music, it occurred to me to transform a violin into a tiny refuge itself, complete with a chair and a way to make more music from inside.

This is a companion piece to "Sibling Revelry": the violin body (donated by High Strung Violins in Durham) supplied one of the violin scrolls, and the chair is made from pieces of oak carved off of the larger chair. My husband Nathan is technically responsible for the music and the light (the tiny light bulb and the choice of tunes for the sheet music) which is what gave me the idea for the title of the piece."
